WA Food Act 2008 - Applying the Elements

Scientific Officers from the DOH Food Unit will discuss discrete topics around food safety management that will assist practitioners implement the new ‘Food Act’. They will provide a checklist to assist delegates prepare for its implementation and discuss the importance of ’food receipts’ and ’food processing’. The speakers will finish by discussing the role of LGO’s and their officers in food safety programs and food recalls.

WORKSHOP
Managing Risks in the Aquatic Environment

This workshop will examine a broad range of physical, environmental and operational risks associated with the operation of an aquatic facility.  Presenters have been selected to review a broad spectrum of risk management and attendance of this workshop will provide participants with an enhanced appreciation of managing risks in the aquatic industry.
Presenters include
Mr Peter Leversuch of the Royal Life Saving Society discussing injury prevention and the management of single operated facilitities.
Ms Jaala Downes DOH will explore the background of microbial pathogens cryptosporidium, acanthamoeba and legionella and examine how these microbial risks are managed to minimize their influence in swimming pool waters.
Mr Sid Brodie DOH will discuss the risks associated with the introduction of water spray grounds and what treatments are necessary to prevent injury.
Mr Darrell Doust (Principal of ) Poolwerx in Western Australia will examine how to balance your water in an aquatic environment so that the influence of chlorine and pH will be enhanced.  A pool out of balance will only harbour problems for the Operator.  Darrell will also provide examples of the various types of filters for closer examination and understanding of its components.
Mr Llew Withers DOH will facilitate the Workshop and examine the management of risks within the aquatic industry exploring how environmental health officers and assistants may better interpret legislation and gain a better understanding of how the Code of Practice should be interpreted.

This session has been designed for those persons who are generally responsible for the sampling of aquatic facilities and would be of immense value for EHOs and EH Assistants.  A CD of all Conference Proceedings (including presentations from this workshop) will be circulated to all participants following the Conference.

Recently appointed EHAA Media Officer - Mary Ward – facilitates this interactive session. Innovative ways the EHAA could access and harness media to advantage will be explored and then developed. Participants will be invited to relook at what is happening in their professional worlds from a journalistic perspective in the future.

Emergencies are caused by natural hazards, human acts (deliberate and accidental) and technological mishaps. Emergency preparation is imperative to safeguard life, property, the environment and future business/service delivery. An emergency, particularly fire, can cause injury, death, property damage, destroy business records, put people out of work, drive customers elsewhere, and cause loss of productivity, profitability, market share, reputation and image.
This session will provide an appreciation and understanding of emergency management planning as a mitigation strategy.

A discussion style workshop where John Macpherson will outline the practical application of the Draft Statement of Planning Policy for Road and Rail Transport Noise.  A WAPC member will provide scope for the policy for all local government EHO’s and industry.
